What to do after a non-fault taxi accident
Start with safety, then record the facts and consider the help you need.
1. Make the scene safe
Stop and assess whether anyone needs urgent assistance. Call 999 where there is an emergency. Move to a safe position if you can do so without putting yourself or others at risk. Do not drive a vehicle you suspect is unsafe.
2. Exchange and record details
Where safe, record the other vehicle’s registration, driver and contact details, and relevant insurance information. Photograph vehicle positions, damage, road markings and the wider scene. Note witnesses and preserve dashcam footage. Record facts accurately without guessing.
3. Check reporting requirements
Follow the applicable duties to exchange details and report the accident. The official GOV.UK accident guidance explains reporting requirements. Notify your insurer in line with your policy, even if you do not intend to claim under it.
4. Work out what you need
Is the vehicle roadworthy and licensed for the work you do? Is another suitable vehicle available? Would your policy’s courtesy car be usable as a taxi? These questions help establish a reasonable replacement need.
5. Understand your options
You may have options through your insurer, the responsible party’s insurer or a credit hire provider. Compare suitability, responsibilities and costs.
